The Apparitions of the Virgin Mary in San Sebastian de Garabandal

014 Mr. Alejandro Damians and Mr. Benjamin Gomez were witnesses of the Miracle of the Visible Communion.

1. Alejandro Damians.

En reiteradas ocasiones y a diversas personas he tenido que relatar la impresión que me causó el prodigio que tuve la oportunidad de presenciar en S. Sebastián de Garabandal del día 18 de julio de 1962. Iniciaré, pues mi informe remontándome al lunes 16 de julio de 1962. Sabía ya entonces, que para el próximo día 18 estaba anunciado el primer prodigio de Garabandal, o mejor dicho, el primer hecho extraordinario público o de transcendencia ya que allí, como en todas partes, los prodigios de Dios se suceden continuamente con el transcurso de la vida.

On repeated occasions and to different people I have had to relate the impression I had from the prodigy that I had the opportunity to witness in San Sebastián de Garabandal on July 18, 1962.  My report begins on Monday, July 16, 1962.  I already knew that the first prodigy of Garabandal was announced for July 18, or to say it better, the first extraordinary event made public, since here, in all parts, the prodigies of God continually happen in daily life.

Siempre he creído ser un hombre de fe. Jamás he necesitado presenciar milagros para reafirmar mis creencias, pero la humana curiosidad me había llevado ya en el mes de marzo a visitar la pequeña aldea de la provincia de Santander.

I have always considered myself a man of faith.  I have never needed to witness miracles to reaffirm my beliefs, but human curiosity brought me to visit the small village in the province of Santander in the month of March.

Sin ser particularmente impresionable, la bondad de sus habitantes, los éxtasis de las niñas, el ambiente sobrenatural que parece experimentarse al pisar aquellas tierras, la estoica resignación colectiva que aquellas gentes ante un cúmulo de circunstancias a todas luces extraordinarias y los extraños casos de índole personal interior, que me han sucedido, produjeron un marcado impacto en mis sentidos. No obstante, como experiencia me parecía ya suficiente y si bien tenía deseos de volver a Garabandal, estaba indeciso sobre la determinación a tomar en aquella ocasión.

Without being a particularly excitable person, the goodness of the inhabitants, the ecstasies of the children, the supernatural atmosphere upon walking this land, the collective feeling of stoic resignation that the people had amid the circumstances that had such an extraordinary light and strange personal inclination, it happened to produce a marked impact on my senses.  Nevertheless, my experience seemed already sufficient and even though I had a desire to return to Garabandal, I was indecisive about the choice I should make on that occasion.

Confieso sinceramente que estoy muy apegado a las comodidades, en cuanto mi situación y quehaceres lo permiten, y tal vez por ello estaba dispuesto a tomarme unas pequeñas vacaciones veraniegas en Premia del Mar, intentando ignorar que para el próximo día 18 estaba anunciado un prodigio que difícilmente tendría ocasión de presenciar. Me propuse buscar paliativos a mi abulia pretextando que si estaba destinado debía trasladarme a la pequeña aldea se cumpliría la divina voluntad sin intervención por mi parte.

I confess sincerely that I am much attached to comforts as long as my situation and obligations permit it.  I was disposed to take some small summer vacation days in Premiá del Mar.  I tried to ignore that a prodigy was announced the next day, July 18, and I would have a difficult time trying to witness it.  I determined to look for palliative solutions for my apathy on the pretext that if I was destined to go to the small village I would be complying with divine will without any intervention on my part.

Un primo mío estaba deseoso de ir y yo había supeditado mi decisión a la suya; habíamos convenido que antes de su partida, de regreso de un pueblecito de la costa, pasaría por mi residencia para que le confirmara si me unía o no a la expedición. La hora de la cita había sido fijada sobre las 7 de la tarde; transcurría con exceso dicha hora sin que tuviera al respecto, por lo que resolví acomodarme a la vida familiar, ya plenamente resuelto de no interrumpir mis cortas vacaciones.

A cousin of mine wanted to go and I had subordinated my decision to his.  We had decided that before his departure to return to a little village on the coast, he would pass by my residence to confirm whether or not I was coming with him on his expedition.  The hour for this appointment had been fixed at 7 in the evening.  That hour passed and he didn’t come, so I resolved to make myself comfortable with family life.  I was already fully resolved not to interrupt my short vacation.

En plena cena recibí su visita, indicándome que por motivos familiares le era imposible desplazarse pero que, un amigo suyo, estaba dispuesto a efectuar el viaje si encontraba un compañero; decliné la invitación.

I received his visit during dinner time and he said that for family reasons it was impossible for him to leave, but that a friend of his wanted to make the trip if he could find a companion.  I declined the invitation.

Cada vez se presentaban más propicias las circunstancias para excusarme; lo intempestivo de la hora, la imposibilidad de mi primo y la idea de realizar el viaje con quien todavía era un desconocido para mí, reforzaban mi decisión de quedarme en casa.

Each time the circumstances for excusing me became more favorable:  The inconvenient time, my cousin’s inability to go, and the idea of making a trip with a stranger reinforced my decision to stay home.

Y en este punto, en la forma más humana y sencilla, tuve plena conciencia de la voluntad divina en la presión que sobre mí ejercieron, no sólo mi esposa y mi primo de quienes ya esperaba semejante reacción, sino principalmente de mi hijo a quien su corta edad parecía no autorizar a ello; reconvenciones de mi esposa, consejos de mi primo y súplicas de mi hijo: al fin cedí.

At this point, in the most human and simplest of forms, I had a full inner knowledge of the divine will by the pressure that they had on me not only from my wife and my cousin, from whom I already expected such reaction, but also from my son, who even at a young age seemed to want me to go.  My wife convinced me, my cousin advised me, and my son asked me:  finally, I agreed to go.

A partir de este momento, los hechos se sucedieron a una velocidad vertiginosa; una conferencia telefónica al amigo de mi primo, nuestra cita para las cuatro de la madrugada, el viaje a Barcelona para, con mi esposa, preparar lo imprescindible y dejar una nota advirtiendo al despacho de mi ausencia por unos días… Todo fue realizándose de forma sucesiva, atropellada y como en una pesadilla. A las cuatro en punto pues, mi nuevo amigo con su hermano, mi esposa y yo, partimos en coche hacia el Norte.

At this moment, the events happened with great speed; one telephone conference to my cousin’s friend, our appointment for four in the morning, the trip to Barcelona with my wife to prepare what was necessary and to leave a note warning my office that I would be absent for a few days…Everything happened successively, brusquely like in a nightmare.  At four AM sharp, my new friend and his brother and my wife and I departed in a car for the North.

En este momento es forzoso citar un detalle que estaba destinado a ser tal vez el más importante; antes de partir, mi primo me entregó una máquina de filmar de un amigo suyo, dándome una superficial indicación de cómo debía usarla, mayormente importante por cuanto mi incompetencia de dicha materia, era fruto de un total y absoluto desconocimiento de dicha técnica.

In this moment it is important to cite a detail that will become the most important one.  Before departure, my cousin handed me a movie camera which belonged to a friend of his.  He gave me a quick lesson in how I should use it, but I am incompetent with this sort of things because I don’t know anything about technical language.

Nuestro viaje no ofrece detalles dignos de mención salvo su interrumpido rodar por la carretera puesto que, sin dormir, a las 10 de la noche del día 17 llegamos a Garabandal.

Our journey does not offer any details worth mentioning, other than that we rode on the highway without sleeping until 10 at night of July 17th when we arrived at Garabandal.

La pequeña aldea estaba invadida de forasteros. Sin publicidad alguna, la noticia de la primera prueba perceptible de la veracidad de los hechos y acontecimientos patentizados hasta la fecha, se había extendido por todo el país; una multitud procedente de diversas regiones y clases sociales daba un matiz excepcional al ambiente, en el que podía respirarse una expectación inusitada. Entre los visitantes había varios sacerdotes que departían entre sí y con D. Valentín, párroco de Cosió, que había subido hasta Garabandal, para los cultos que debían tener lugar al día siguiente, la fiesta mayor.

The little village had been invaded by strangers.  Without any formal news coverage, the news of the first visible proof of the events and happenings to this date had expanded throughout the entire country.  A multitude from different regions and social classes gave an exceptional nuance to the atmosphere, in which we could feel the expectation.  Among the visitors there were several priests including Fr. Valentín, the pastor of Cosío, who had come to Garabandal for the liturgical cult that was going to take place the next day, which was a major feast.

Encontramos habitación en casa de Encarna, tía de una de las niñas videntes, donde dejamos nuestro escaso equipaje, partiendo seguidamente hacia la de Conchita, una de las cuatro videntes y la que, precisamente, tenía anunciado el milagro.

We found lodging in Encarna’s house, who was an aunt of one of the seers.  This is where we left our light luggage before rushing immediately to Conchita’s house.  She was one of the four seers and the one who had announced the miracle.

Aquella noche presenciamos un éxtasis, como siempre extraordinario, que hizo aún más mella en nuestra sensibilidad, toda vez que nos hallábamos aguardando la demostración visible de lo sobrenatural.

That night we witnessed an ecstasy, which was extraordinary as always.  It made an impression in our sensibility for as long we were awaiting the visible demonstration of the supernatural.

Parece absurdo referirme al día siguiente, cuando en mi imaginación los días 17 y 18 constituyen un todo interrumpido, ya que a aquella noche que en aquellos momentos me pareció extraordinariamente larga, le sucedió un pálido amanecer nublado, de color gris plomizo, que parecía una continuación de la noche; a la misa de madrugada le siguió un pequeño bullicio de pueblo en fiesta, muy débil por la mañana y que fue aumentando en las primeras horas de la tarde.

It seems absurd to refer myself to the next day for in my imagination July 17 and 18 appeared as one uninterrupted whole.  That night, that at times seemed extraordinarily long, followed by a pale and cloudy dawn, of a dark grey color, seemed like a continuation of the night.  The morning mass was followed by the small noise of the festivities of the village, very weak in the morning, but it grew larger with the early hours of the afternoon.

Casi todo el día 18 lo pasé en el interior de la casa de Conchita con mi esposa, mi amigo y varios sacerdotes, así como otras personas desconocidas. Tuve ocasión de hablar con Fray Justo, sacerdote Franciscano con quien luego he sostenido correspondencia, y que en carta a un amigo mío decía cuan incrédulo había partido de Garabandal después del prodigio. No había de tardar mucho tiempo en ver la luz y rectificar, si bien es asunto que no es ahora ocasión de relatar.

I spent almost all of July 18 inside Conchita’s house with my wife, my friend, and some priests, and with other people I didn’t know.  I had the opportunity to speak with Fr. Justo, a Franciscan priest with whom I have sustained a correspondence.  In a letter a friend of mine said how incredulous he was when he left Garabandal after the prodigy.  He didn’t take much time to see the light and rectify his mistakes, but now is not the proper occasion to address this matter.

Dos circunstancias se daban cita en aquella ocasión para albergar dudas si se produciría o no el prodigio anunciado; una de ellas, el ambiente festivo que reinaba en el pueblo; otra la presencia de sacerdotes. En algunas ocasiones anteriores, las niñas no habían entrado en éxtasis; de otra parte, la presencia de sacerdotes había motivado anteriormente el que las niñas recibieran la comunión normalmente y nunca por mediación del Ángel.

Two circumstances existed that led to doubts that the announced prodigy would take place.  One of them was the festive atmosphere that reigned in the village; the other one was the presence of the priests:  In some previous occasions, the girls had not entered into ecstasy. On the others, the presence of the priests had motivated the girls to receive communion normally and not through the Angel’s mediation.

El ambiente era de duda puesto que, en contra de tales hechos comprobados, se decía entre los visitantes que Conchita había avisado personalmente a algunos sacerdotes para que fueran el día 18, así como que a las preguntas que le fueron formulando aquel mismo día en tal sentido, había manifestado que ni la fiesta, ni la presencia de aquellos serían obstáculo para la realización del prodigio.

The atmosphere was one of doubt because, against the proven facts, it was said among the visitors that Conchita had told some priests personally to come on July 18.  Also, to the questions made to her during that day with this regard, she had expressed that not even the party, nor the presence of those people would be an obstacle for the prodigy to take place.

Sobre las tres de la tarde, Conchita anunció que se iba a almorzar, lo cual nos dio el convencimiento de que si lo que debía producirse era la comunión, tendríamos aún que esperar un mínimo de tres horas para que tuviera efecto. Así, entre dudas, esperanza, tedio e ilusión fue transcurriendo el día.

Around three in the afternoon, Conchita announced that she was going to eat lunch, which convinced us that if the Communion was going to happen, we would have to wait a minimum of three hours.  So the day continued to go on, in the middle of doubts, hope, tedium, and illusion.

Rebasadas las 12 horas de la noche sin manifestación alguna que hiciera presagiar nada extraordinario, cundió el desaliento y la incredulidad.

Past 12 o’clock of midnight, without any sign foretelling of an extraordinary phenomenon, disbelief and incredulity was began to spread.

Cerca de la una de la madrugada del día 19, cuando algunos habían emprendido el regreso a sus puntos de origen, como un reguero de pólvora se extendió la noticia de que, según la hora solar y la situación geográfica del pueblecito, el día 18 no terminaría hasta las 1,25 de la madrugada. Por aquel entonces, los que estábamos en el interior de la casa, sabíamos ya una cosa cierta: Conchita había recibido la primera llamada.

Around one in the morning on July 19, when some people had already began their return to their place of origin, the news spread that according to the solar hour and the geographic location of the little village, July 18 would not end until 1:25 in the morning.  Then, those of us who were inside the house knew one thing for certain:  Conchita had received the first call.

Poco después nos mandaron desalojar la casa y quedé en el portal en compañía de un amigo de la familia de Conchita, para evitar la entrada de cualquier persona. Desde mi emplazamiento dominaba la cocina y la escalera que conduce al piso superior de la casa. Allí se hallaba Conchita, creo que con una prima y un tío suyo, cuando entró en éxtasis.

A little while later, they sent us to clear the house and I remained in the porch with a friend of Conchita’s family in order to block the entrance to other people.  From my place, I had full view of the kitchen and the stairs that led to the second floor of the house.  Conchita was there, I believe with a cousin and an uncle, when she entered into ecstasy.

Mi primera noticia fue verla bajar por la escalera, muy aprisa, con aquella actitud clásica en que sus facciones se dulcifican y embellecen. Al cruzar el portal, la gente que aguardaba ante la casa abrió paso el tiempo justo para dejarla pasar y a partir de este momento la multitud se arremolinó a su alrededor como un río desbordado que arrasa cuanto encuentra a su paso. Vi caer a muchas personas, que eran pisadas por el gentío desbordado, sin que yo sepa de nadie que resultara lesionado, aún cuando el aspecto de aquella masa a la carrera, empujándose unos a otros, no podía ser más aterrador.

The first thing I noticed was seeing her descend the stairs very quickly, with that classic attitude in which her features become sweeter and more beautiful.  When she crossed the threshold, the people guarding the front of the house moved out of the way to let her pass and after that, the multitude crowded together around her like an overflowing river that tramples anything on its path.  I saw many people fall and they were trampled by the overflowing crowd.   I don’t know of anyone who was injured, although the people were racing, pushing each other; it could not have been more terrifying.

Intenté mantenerme cerca de Conchita, pero cinco o seis filas de personas se interponían entre nosotros; a veces, la distinguía aunque con escasa claridad. Dobló al a izquierda, pasó por el pasadizo que forma la fachada lateral de la casa con un muro bajo, volvió a torcer a la izquierda, y el centro de aquella callejuela (relativamente ancha) cayó de repente de rodillas.

I tried to stay close to Conchita, but five or six rows of people were between us.  At times, I could see her although not with great clarity.  She turned to the left, passed through an opening that formed the exterior side of the house with a low wall.  She twisted to the left again, and in the center of the road (which was relatively wide), she fell on her knees suddenly.

Fue tan inesperada su caída, que el alud de gente, por su propia inercia, la sobrepasó por los costados rebasándola; al librarme de esta suerte, de los que me precedían y separaban de Conchita, quedé inesperadamente a su derecha y a medio metro de su rostro. Aguanté con firmeza y grandes dificultades el empuje de mis seguidores, intentando con todas mis fuerzas no ser desplazado del privilegiado lugar en que me hallaba y lo conseguí. Los empujones fueron decreciendo, para quedar finalmente todo en relativa calma.

Her fall was so unexpected that the flood of people, through their inertia, passed her by.  Luckily this freed me from those who were in front of me and that kept me away from Conchita. Unexpectedly, this left me by her right side, about a half a meter from her face.  I withstood the pushing of those around me with firmness and great difficulty, trying with all of my effort not to be moved from the privileged place I had found; I succeeded.  The pushing diminished, and finally everything was relatively calm.

Poco antes de medianoche, las nubes que oscurecían el cielo, se habían disipado y el manto azulado se había iluminado de estrellas que brillaban alrededor de la luna. A su luz y a la de infinidad de linternas de mano que alumbraban la calleja, pude distinguir perfectamente que Conchita tenía la boca abierta y la lengua fuera, en la clásica actitud de comulgar. Estaba más bonita que nunca. Su expresión, su gesto, lejos de provocar risa o presentar un aspecto vulgar e incluso ridículo, era de un misticismo impresionante y conmovedor.

A little before midnight, the clouds that darkened the sky had dissipated and the blue blanket illuminated the stars that shone around the moon. With this light and the great number of lanterns that lit the street, I could distinguish perfectly that Conchita had her mouth open and her tongue out, in the classic attitude of receiving Communion.  She was very beautiful.  Her expression and her gesture, far from provoking laughter or making a vulgar or ridiculous appearance, was one of impressive mysticism and it was very moving.

De pronto, sin saber cómo, sin darme cuenta, sin que Conchita hubiese cambiado lo más mínimo la posición, la Sagrada Forma apareció en su lengua. Fue totalmente inesperado. No dio la impresión de estar depositada allí, sino que más bien podría decirse, que brotó a velocidad superior al de la percepción de la mirada humana.

Suddenly, without knowing how, without realizing it, and without Conchita changing position, the Sacred Form appeared on her tongue.  It was totally unexpected.  It didn’t give the impression of being deposited there, instead, it could be said that it appeared with speed greater than the perception of the human glance.

Es imposible describir la impresión que sentí en aquel momento y que siento hoy al recordarlo. Sorpresa, asombro, confusión son sentimientos demasiado encontrados para definirlos en una sola expresión. Con éstas o parecidas frases he relatado una y otra vez cómo aconteció y jamás he podido evitar, al llegar a este punto, sentir aquella impresión maravillosa que encoge el corazón dentro del pecho, llenándolo de ternura y humedece los ojos en un deseo incontenible de llorar… Lágrimas de alegría, de satisfacción, de felicidad, de amor…, de lo que sea, pero lágrimas al fin.

It is impossible to describe the impression that I felt in that moment and that I feel now when I remember it. Surprise, amazement, and confusion are not sufficient to define that single impression.  With these or similar phrases I have related once and again how it took place and I have never been able to avoid, when I arrive at this point, to feel that marvelous emotion that captures the heart within the chest, filling it with tenderness and moistening the eyes with an uncontrollable desire to cry… Tears of happiness, satisfaction, of joy, of love…of all of these things, but still tears nevertheless.

Más tarde tuve conocimiento de que Conchita permaneció unos dos minutos reteniendo inmóvil, sobre la lengua la Hostia hasta tragarla normalmente y besar el Crucifijo que llevaba en su mano. Según he podido saber unos meses más tarde, tan larga espera fue debida a que el Ángel dijo a Conchita que la mantuviese a la vista hasta que la Virgen se le apareciera.

Later I was made aware that Conchita stayed immobile for two minutes with the Host on her tongue before normally swallowing it and kissing the Crucifix she carried in her hand.  According to what I learned a few months later, she waited so long because the Angel told Conchita to continue keep it at open view until the Virgin appeared.

En aquellos momentos no me di cuenta del tiempo transcurrido; recuerdo, como en un sueño, las voces que reclamaban a gritos que me agachase, así como haber recibido un fuerte golpe sobre mi cabeza.

In those moments, I didn’t realized how much time had passed.  I remember it like in a dream, with voices that demanded with screams for me to lower my head, as well as having received a hard blow on my head.

Colgada de mi brazo llevaba mi máquina de filmar; sin hacer caso de las protestas que surgían a mi alrededor, sin recordar casi las instrucciones recibidas de mi primo, saqué el tomavistas de su estuche, apreté el disparador y filmé los últimos instantes de la comunión de Conchita. Jamás había utilizado ningún aparato similar, ni siquiera había filmado, y sólo tenía la seguridad de haber acertado en el enfoque de la figura, aunque por mi total carencia de técnica, menos aún de conocimientos adecuados, puse en duda el satisfactorio resultado de la película; incidían en ello, todavía otros factores como la adecuada clase de película, intensidad de luz, allí casi inexistente, etc.

I was still carrying the movie camera on my arm.  Without taking notice of the protests that surged around me, and without quite remembering the instructions that my cousin had given me, I took the camera from its case, pushed the record button, and filmed the last instants of Conchita’s Communion.  I had never used a similar apparatus, and I had never filmed anything, and I only had the certainty of putting the figure in focus.  With my total lack of technical knowledge, I adapted my understanding, and I put in doubt the satisfactory outcome of the picture because there were still other factors like the proper type of film, the intensity of the light, which was almost nonexistent, etc…

Conchita se levantó aún en éxtasis, desapareciendo de mi vista seguida por todas las personas presentes en Garabandal. Más tarde supe que aquél duró alrededor de una hora. Por mi parte ya tenía bastantes emociones; me quedé sólo en un rincón, recostado en la pared y apretando contra mi cuerpo la máquina de filmar, con las pocas fuerzas que me quedaban.

Conchita got up even though she was in ecstasy, and she disappeared from my sight among all of the people present in Garabandal.  Later I knew that it had lasted about an hour.  For my part, I had already had too many emotions; I stayed alone in a corner, leaning on a wall and holding the camera to my body with the little strength I had left.

Ignoro el tiempo que permanecí en aquel lugar y en aquella postura. Cuando la laxitud de mis miembros sucedió a la rigidez provocada por el nerviosismo, fui recorriendo el pueblo sin rumbo fijo y a paso lento. Cambié comentarios con la gente esparcida por todas partes y finalmente regresé a casa de Cochita, no se hallaba en trance y me escribió unas frases en una estampa.

I ignored the time while I remained in that place and in that posture.  When the laxity of my limbs turned into rigidity because of nervousness, I ran through the village without fixed direction and very slowly.  I exchanged commentaries with the people from all parts and I finally returned to Conchita’s house.  I found her outside of the trance and she wrote me some sentences on a holy card.

Finalmente, me despedí de ella y de D. Valentín, que me había mandado llamar para pedirme mis señas y totalmente agotado partía de Garabandal, en dirección a Barcelona: eran las 3,15 de la madrugada.

Finally, I said goodbye to her and to Fr. Valentín, who had sent for me to ask me about my signs before leaving Garabandal completely exhausted and going toward Barcelona:  it was 3:15 in the morning.

No se qué opinarán los que lean este relato, ni la decisión que adoptará la Iglesia al juzgar los hechos. Lo ignoro en absoluto y es muy posible, al presente, que no sientan interés alguno por ello.

I don’t know what opinion will have those who read this account, nor do I know the decision the Church will make about the happenings.  I absolutely ignore it, and it is possible that at this point, they may not feel any interest towards it.

Lo único que sí puedo afirmar, sin ningún reparo ni duda, es que el día 18 de julio de 1962, para mí, en Garabandal ocurrieron dos milagros: el primero fue la comunión de Conchita, que revistió caracteres sobrenaturales de inapreciables proporciones; el segundo, siendo de menor alcance colectivo, pero no menos transcendente para mí, la prueba de la infinita condescendencia de la Virgen, porque sólo a Ella puedo deber la dicha de haber presenciado el prodigio.

The only thing that I can affirm, without any doubt is that two miracles occurred for me July 18, 1962:  the first one, was Conchita’s Communion, which contained supernatural character of inestimable proportions; the second one is of a far less collective reach, but not less transcendent for me.  It is the proof of the infinite condescension of the Virgin, because it is only to her that I could owe the joy of having witnessed the prodigious sign.

Puede considerarse este hecho, como una de las cosas más importantes entre los hechos que han tenido lugar en Garabandal. Fue el 18 de Julio de 1962. Anunciado por la niña con muchas cartas desde 15 días antes.

This fact can be considered with one of the most important ones among the events that have taken place in Garabandal.  It was July 18, 1962.  It had been announced by the child in many letters 15 days before it happened.

El número de personas que subió a Garabandal ese día entre dos mil y tres mil. Juzgando por el calendario, el hecho tuvo lugar el día 19 ya que fue sobre la una menos cuarto de la madrugada del día 19 cuando se realizó. Pero si tenemos en cuenta la hora solar real local estamos en el 18.

The number of people who went up to Garabandal that day is between two and three thousand.  Judging by the calendar, the event took place on July 19 at about 12:45 in the morning.  But if we take into account the solar time, then it was July 18.

Las personas que cita Conchita como presentes en su casa en el momento de presentársele el Ángel son: su madre, su hermano Cetuco (Aniceto), su prima Luciuca, hija de Antonia y de Tomás. Antonia es hermana de Aniceta. Viven habitualmente en Cabezón de la Sal. Tendría Luciuca como unos 11 años cuando sucedió el milagro de la Comunión. También se cita a la señorita María del Carmen Fontaneda.

The people that Conchita lists as being present in her house the moment the Angel presented himself are:  her mother, her brother Cetuco (Aniceto), and her cousin Luciuca, daughter of Antonia and Tomás.  Antonia is Ancieta’s sister.  They live in Cabezón de la Sal.  Luciuca was 11 years old when the miracle of the Communion happened.  María del Carmen Fontaneda was also present.

Son muchos los testigos que se han encontrado presentes en este hecho. Conchita quedó en éxtasis en la habitación superior de la casa. En este estado descendió las escaleras y salió a la calle. Avanzó girando hacia la izquierda, hasta llegar a una pequeña calleja donde cayó de rodillas. En este estado y con las manos extendidas hacia abajo sacó la lengua limpia. De pronto, en la fracción de un segundo, brotó la Forma. Era semejante a las que suelen darse en las Iglesias aunque de apariencia algo más gruesa. Era blanca. La vieron todos los que miraron, ya que la niña permaneció con la lengua fuera durante el espacio de unos dos minutos o algo más.

There were many witnesses present for this event.  Conchita entered into ecstasy in the upper room of the house.  She descended the stairs in this state and went out to the street.  She went forward and turned to the left until she arrived at a small road, where she fell to her knees.  In this state, and with her hands extended downward, she put out her tongue, which had nothing on it.  Suddenly, in a fraction of a second, the Form appeared.  It was similar to those given in the Church, but it seemed a little thicker.  It was white.  All who looked saw it and the girl kept it on her tongue for about two minutes, or maybe longer.

Cuenta el Sr. Damians cómo fue empujado y cayó por tierra. Al revelar el film se encontró con un número de casi 70 fotogramas de 8mm en blanco y negro, muy defectuosos en el aspecto técnico, pero suficientemente claros en lo que se refiere a que puede apreciarse en ellos la presencia de una hostia en la lengua de la niña. Uno de estos fotogramas es el que con tanta frecuencia aparece en las publicaciones sobre Garabandal.

Mr. Damians tells that he was pushed and fell on the ground.  When the film was developed, he found about 70 photographs in 8mm black and white, very poor technically, but sufficiently clear when it came to the presence of the Host on the child’s tongue.  One of these photographs is the one that frequently appears in the publications about Garabandal.

El Sr. Obispo de Santander, D. Eugenio Beitia Aldazabal, se interesó por este film y escribió a D. Alejandro Damians solicitando una copia del mismo ya que “podía ser de gran interés y servicio para la Iglesia”.

The Bishop of Santander, Fr. Eugenio Beitia Aldazabal, became interest in this film and wrote to Mr. Alejandro Damians asking for a copy of it since “it could be of great interest and service to the Church.”

Con este film quedó probado que lo que vieron los presentes no fue una alucinación de ellos sino que realmente lo que vieron que había en la boca de la niña era verdad.

With this film, what the people present saw can be proven.  It was not a hallucination; what they saw in the child’s mouth was real and true.

 

1. Benjamín Gómez.

Benjamin Gómez, vecino de Pesués, Cantabria, pueblo cercano a Garabandal, fue testigo de numerosos éxtasis de las niñas. Durante las Apariciones de la Santísima Virgen María dió un cambio muy grande a su vida, ya que había vivido apartado de la Iglesia durante muchos años. Durante las Apariciones se convirtió y recuperó la paz y la felicidad de  vivir en Gracia de Dios.

Mr. Benjamín Gómez.

Benjamín Gómez, a neighbor from Pesués, Cantabria, a village near Garabandal, was a witness of numerous ecstasies that the girls experienced.  During the Apparitions of the Most Holy Virgin Mary, he made a very great change in his life, since he had been living apart from the Church for many years.  During the Apparitions he converted and recovered the peace and happiness of living in the Grace of God.

De entre los sucesos que vivieron personalmente hay algunos que solía contar con frecuencia a los forasteros:

Among the events that he personally lived, there are some that he often recounts to outsiders:

Siendo un hombre muy fuerte en su juventud, con una fuerza que, según decía, de joven levantaba con ambas manos un par de pesos que sumasen más de cien kilos con facilidad, sin embargo fue incapaz de mover a las niñas en éxtasis lo que le llamó la atención sobremanera.

He was a very strong man in his youth, with so much strength, according to what he says, that he could easily lift more than 100 kilos of weight with two hands.  Yet, he was unable to lift the girls while they were in ecstasy.  This got his attention tremendously.

En una ocasión tuvo una prueba de la existencia del Purgatorio: Caminaba con su borrico por el campo cuando de pronto vio a un conocido suyo que había muerto hace años. Estaba sufriendo, envuelto en una luz cálida como de fuego. El borrico se asustó y salió corriendo. Benjamín siguió mirando y se dijo, ¿cómo es posible que este hombre esté sufriendo allá en la otra vida sin que nadie le ayude? El sabía que, en aquel lugar, ese hombre había tomado parte en un crimen durante la guerra y en aquel mismo lugar estaba padeciendo la culpa.

On one occasion he received a proof about the existence of Purgatory:  while walking with his donkey through the field, he suddenly saw someone he knew who had died years before.  He was suffering, covered in a warm light like a fire.  The donkey was frightened and ran away.  Benjamín continued looking and said, how is it possible that this man is suffering in the other life and no one helps him?  Benjamín knew that this man had taken part in a crime during the war and in that very location he was now purging the guilt.

Lo comentó con un viejo amigo del pueblo que le dijo «yo también lo vi, pero no te lo quería decir porque no quería que te rieses de mí». Desde entonces no cesó de pedir por él, en especial a partir de su conversión.

He mentioned this to an old friend in the village who told him, “I saw him also, but I didn’t want to tell you because I didn’t want you to laugh at me.”  From that time on, Benjamín didn’t stop praying for his friend, especially after his conversion.

Un suceso muy importante para su vida fue cuando por una grave enfermedad se puso muy enfermo y ya sin remedio entró en coma, ya sin poder comer ni beber. Todos en el pueblo esperaban la hora de su muerte.

An important event in his life was when he was very ill and entered into a coma.  He was not able to eat or drink.  The whole village waited for the hour of his death.

A muchos ha dicho que de repente despertó y se sintió sano, pero la verdadera historia la dijo años después. La Virgen del Carmen de Garabandal se le apareció a cierta altura sobre los pies de su cama, tal como la veían las niñas, y con amor de Madre le curó al instante y pudo ya levantarse, comer y hacer vida normal.

Many have said that he suddenly awoke and felt healed, but he told the real story years later.  Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Garabandal appeared above the foot of his bed, just as the girls saw her, and with the love of a Mother, she cured him.  In that instant, he was able to get up, eat, and live a normal life.

Cuenta sobre esto que con «con ninguna cosa humana o imaginable podría explicar lo que sintió, y que lo divino y lo humano nada, nada, tienen que ver lo uno con lo otro, refiriéndose a que no sabía explicar con nada de acá, de este mundo, las cosas sobrenaturales que sintió viendo a la Virgen».

He tells about this saying that “no human thing imaginable can explain what I felt, and that the divine and the human do not have anything to do one with the other, referring to that he did not know how to explain with anything of this world the supernatural occurrences that he felt when he saw the Virgin.”

Tanto influyó esto en su vida que decía «Esta pobre Madre ha hecho conmigo cosas que no puedo menos de llorar» Era lo único que a este hombre recio le hacia llorar como un niño, reconociendo en esa expresión «esta pobre Madre» lo que el sentía que antes le había hecho sufrir a nuestra Madre del Cielo con su anterior vida descarriada.

He was so influenced in his life by this, that he used to say “this poor Mother has done such things for me that the only thing I can do is cry.”  This was the only thing that made this man cry like a child, recognizing by this expression “this poor Mother,” what he felt he had made our Heavenly Mother suffer with his past sinful life.

Posteriormente, desde su casa en Pesués, y en Garabandal en su casita al lado de la de Conchita, dio a conocer a muchos las Apariciones y con su magnetófono solía poner a los forasteros fragmentos del Rosario que rezaban las niñas en éxtasis, con un rezo pausado y meditado de cada frase, y un énfasis en la voz. Después solía relatar el Milagro de la Comunión visible de Conchita que el mismo vivió personalmente.

Later on, from his home in Pesués, and in Garabandal in his little house next to Conchita’s, he shared with many what he saw about the Apparitions and he made it possible for many outsiders to heard fragments of the Rosary that the girls prayed in ecstasy with his recorder.  They prayed haltingly, meditating on each phrase, and with emphasis in their voices.  After this, he would tell about the Miracle of Conchita’s visible Communion, which he himself had experienced.

Su muerte y su subida al Cielo coincidieron con un hecho singular. En esa ocasión estaba la Virgen peregrina de Fátima en su pueblo. Como es sabido, en sus viajes por todo el mundo, puede llegar a un pueblo o parroquia pequeña en muy pocas ocasiones cada muchos años. Ese día estaba allí y a su pies estuvo Benjamín Gómez, en su entierro, en su caminar hacia el Cielo.

His death and journey into Heaven coincided with a special event.  On this occasion the pilgrim Virgin of Fatima was in his village.  As is known, in her trips throughout the whole world, she can arrive in a village or a small parish very few times during many years.  This day she was there and Benjamín Gómez in his funeral was laid at her feet in his path towards Heaven.

As a witness to Conchita’s Visible Communion, he gave us a recorded interview on a tape recorder in Burgos.

Pregunta: ¿Vio Usted bien a la niña?

BG (Benjamín Gómez): Perfectamente. Estaba muy cerca de mí.

P: ¿Estaría a un metro de distancia?

BG: No, qué va. Mucho menos. A un palmo escaso.

P: ¿Vio Usted cómo sacaba la lengua?

BG: Sí, vi cómo llegó, cómo se arrodilló con las manos extendidas hacía abajo. Vi cómo sacó la lengua. Y aquí quiero decir una cosa. La lengua la sacó limpia, vacía. Yo me sorprendí y miré. Pude mirar muy bien, porque como les digo estaba muy cerca, a menos de un palmo. Miré su boca, tranquilamente, todo iba bien sin prisas. Miré arriba y nada. Miré abajo y nada. En esto una prima mía que estaba detrás de mí me tocó en el hombro para que me retirase y le dejase ver. Yo giré un momento la cabeza, lo que se dice un momento y cuando volví la cabeza, ya tenía la Forma en la lengua.

Question:  Could you see the girl well?

BG (Benjamín Gómez):  Perfectly.  She was very close to me.

Q:  Were you about a meter away?

BG: No, no.  Much less.  A few inches at the most.

Q:  Did you see how she stuck out her tongue?

BG:  Yes, I saw how she arrived, how she knelt with her hands extended downward.  I saw how she stuck out her tongue.  I want to say something about that.  When she stuck out her tongue, it was clean, empty.  I was surprised and I looked.  I could see very well, because as I told you, I was very close, just a few inches away.  I saw her mouth, and she was very tranquil; there was no hurry.  I looked up and nothing was there.  I looked down and nothing was there.  My cousin was behind me and she touched me on the shoulder so I would move and let her see.  I turned my head for a moment, and when I turned back, she already had the Form on her tongue.

P: Y ¿cómo era la Forma?

BG: ¡Ah! eso… es muy difícil de decir. Era blanca. Pero de un blanco que no es de este mundo. A veces he querido buscar una comparación y no encuentro más que una cosa que se le parece pero de lejos. Es como cuando la nieve. Ha nevado y sale el sol y refleja en la nieve. Pero que entonces hace daño a la vista y este blanco no lastimaba la vista.

P: ¿De qué tamaño era?

BG: Aquí quiero decir una cosa: Por poner una comparación era como dos monedas de veinticinco pesetas una sobre otra. (Entonces la moneda de veinticinco era de un tamaño grande, como  la de dos euros de ahora).

Q:  And what did the Form look like?

BG:  Oh…it is difficult to say.  It was White.  But a white that isn’t of this world.  Sometimes I have looked for something to compare it to, but I can’t find anything that looks like it except at a distance.  It is like when it snows.  It snows and the sun comes out and reflects the snow.  But that hurts your eyes and this white did not.

Q:  What size was it?

BG:  I want to say something here:  for a point of comparison, it was like two 25 pesetas coins, one on top of the other.  (During that time the 25 peseta coins were larger, like the two-euro coins of today).

P: ¿Cree Usted que la niña la pudo poner con la mano?

BG: De ninguna manera. Lo hubiéramos visto. La niña no se movió.

P: ¿Cree Usted que la tenía oculta en la boca y hábilmente la cambió sobre la lengua?.

BG: No pudo hacer eso. Yo miré bien dentro de su boca y allí no había nada de nada.

Otro de los testigos de este hecho fue el albañil de Garabandal llamado José Díaz Cantero, familiarmente Pepe Díaz.

Pepe Díaz firmó un declaración que dice:

El día 18 de julio de 1962 estaba en casa de Aniceta González, madre de Conchita. Ha llegado el instante en que la niña cayo en éxtasis; la he seguido protegiéndola y seguidamente iba la niña por la calle; ha parado cayendo de rodillas, he observado la sorpresa siguiente que me ha causado: en unos momentos advertí que la niña rezaba mentalmente y sacaba su lengua limpia, acto seguido apareció sobre ella un cerco precioso pero difícil de explicar, pero sí advierto que dicho cerco es una Forma completamente clara, después fue aumentando en espesor y en circunferencia; no puedo explicar más datos por lo difícil, por lo importante e impresionante que fue este caso para mí; yo calculo que todo esto que he visto ha durado unos tres minutos aproximadamente. Estoy completamente convencido del Milagro.

Firmo mi declaración en S. Sebastian de Garabandal a 19-7-1964.

Q:  Do you believe that the child could have put it there with her hand?

BG:  That is impossible.  We would have seen her do it.  The child didn’t move.

Q:  Do you believe that she had it hidden in her mouth, and then put it on her tongue?

BG:  She couldn’t have done that.  I looked closely in her mouth and there was nothing there.

Another of the witnesses was the bricklayer of Garabandal, José Díaz Cantero, known as Pepe Díaz.

Pepe Díaz signed a declaration that says:

“On July 18th, 1962, I was in Aniceta González’s house (Conchita’s mother).  The instant that the child fell into ecstasy has arrived.  I have followed her to protect her and we went through the streets; she stopped and fell to her knees, and I have observed the following with surprise:  in a few moments I noticed that the child was praying mentally and then she put out her tongue, which was clean.  Then something round appeared which is difficult to explain, but it was clearly the Form, later it increased in circumference and in thickness.  I can’t explain more because it is too difficult, and because of how important and impressive this was for me.  I calculated that the whole thing lasted about three minutes.  I am completely convinced that this was a Miracle.

I sign my declaration in San Sebastián de Garabandal on July 19, 1964.

Al llegar la Virgen, después de haber recibido la niña la Comunión, le dijo: “Todavía no creen todos”.

Escribe Conchita:

Este milagro que Dios Nuestro Señor hizo por intercesión del Ángel San Miguel, algunos lo vieron completo, otros sólo vieron la Forma en la lengua, en ese momento creyeron firmemente, tanto los que lo habían visto, así como los que sin verlo creyeron por los informes de los que lo vieron.

When the Virgin arrived, after the girl received Communion, she said:  “Not everyone believes yet.”

Conchita writes:

This miracle that Our Lord performed through the intercession of the Angel St. Michael,… some saw the whole thing, others only saw the Form on the tongue, in that moment they firmly believed in what they had seen.  Some people believe without having seen it because of the reports of those who saw it.

019 Testimony of Benjamín Gómez, Witness of the Miracle of the Visible Communion.

Vine por primera vez aquí a Garabandal se puede decir como un curioso mas porque yo, en aquellos tiempos, el hablarme a mi de estas cosas era un poco lejano para mi, toda vez que llevaba varios años, digo varios, de veinte a veinte tres años, se puede decir sin ir a Misa, sin confesar ni comulgar.

I came here to Garabandal for the first time out of curiosity, because in those days talking about these things was not something that interested me.  In those years, from when I was twenty to when I was twenty-three years old, you could say that I never went to Mass, confession, or to receive the sacrament.

Pero llegué a este pueblo por oídas de que si aquí la Virgen se aparecía y las cosas se me cambiaron completamente por algunas razones que voy a explicar.

But I arrived in this village because I heard that the Virgin was appearing here; things changed for me completely for reasons that I am going to explain.

El yo faltar a ir a Misa, perdóname si con esto le ofendo que muchas veces he pedido a Dios que le perdone, fue causa de una persona que a mi juicio tenia que haber intervenido mucho en favor de Dios y sin embargo fue todo lo contrario, quiso hacer conmigo algunas cosas que no pudo conseguirlas pero su voluntad era de perjudicarme y como digo no le pertenecía a este señor.

I stopped going to Mass, forgive me if by this I offend him, I have asked God to forgive him many times.  This was because of a person, who in my judgment, should have intervened for God’s favor for my life, but everything was opposite of what it should had been.  He intended to do certain things with me and he could not accomplish them.  His will was to harm but like I say, I did not belong to this man.

Entonces yo dejé de ir a Misa; cosa muy mal hecha o sea muy mal hecha porque no tenia dentro lo que hoy por suerte puedo decir lo tengo. Y con esto quiero decir que si alguno tiene recelos contra alguna persona como puede ser un cura o puede ser otra persona cualquiera digna de que esté trabajando en favor de Dios y no vea sus hechos completos, que no le dé importancia sino que tenemos que vivir con Dios y la Virgen que son los que están por encima del mundo entero.

So, I stopped going to Mass.  This was a bad thing to do, but I did it because I didn’t have within me what I fortunately have today.  I want to say that if someone feels distrust toward other people; might it be a priest, or any person working for the favor of God, and not see his actions fulfilled, he should not grant it such great importance, for we should live with God and the Virgin, who are above and over the world.

Esto si lo recomiendo a todo el que me escuche: que tenemos que morir y que nos queda otro mundo. Piensen muchos que como se suele decir se murió el perro se acabó la rabia. No, ¡de esto nada! Nos queda otro mundo. ¿Como será? Pues yo creo que no es para todos igual sino que digo yo que tenemos primera, segunda y tercera. Porque bien es verdad que ya lo tenemos bien claro que tenemos la Gloria, el Purgatorio y el Infierno. Y esto es lo que tenemos que pensar al quedarnos otro mundo: hay que pensar en este en llevar una vida recta, una vida muy correcta, la que hoy por desgracia, no quiero ocuparme del mundo porque entonces no acabaría ni en dos horas. Pero en fin, los de mí tiempo, que ya son setenta y dos años, pues pensarán como yo de que este mundo está muy mal.

I recommend this to anyone who will hear me:  we have to die, and that another world remains.  Many people think, like the saying goes, “once the dog is dead, the rabies is over.“ This is not true!  Another world still remains for us.  How will it be?  Well, I believe that it is not the same for everyone because we have the first, the second, and the third.  Because it has been made very clear that there is Heaven, Purgatory, and Hell.  This is what we have to consider when we think about the next world:  we have to lead a good, correct life, because if we do badly here, I don’t want to go to the next world, because it won’t end in two hours.  Those of my generation who are seventy-two years old think like me, that this world is in very bad shape.

Tan mal que aquí en Garabandal, alguna de las niñas ha dicho en aquella época y creo que no mintiera, que nos vendría un Aviso, cuyo Aviso después vendría un Milagro para que el mundo cambiara ya que vamos muy mal, muy mal. Y esto llegará, tardará más o menos. Para algunos parece ser que ya tarda mucho, o sea que yo no sé, aquí, según veo por algunas personas, Dios tenía que ser criado de uno mismo y esto no puede ser porque Dios es Dios y hará las cosas a su manera y El sabe mejor que nadie cómo tiene que hacerlas. Y todo esto creo que llegue porque tiene que llegar. A la vista está de como el mundo se encuentra hoy día por desgracia.

It is so bad here in Garabandal that some of the girls have said at that time, and I don’t believe they lied, that a Warning would come, and after the Warning, there would be a Miracle so that the world will change since we are bad, very bad.  This will arrive, but it will take a little time.  For some, it seems that it has already taken a long time, but I don’t know.  I see here through some people that God cares for them because God is God and he does things His way, and He knows better than anyone how to do things.  I believe that it will come because it has to come.  It is as though the world today is in disgrace.

Los hechos que yo he visto, ya que no soy del pueblo, pero venía con frecuencia. Digo frecuencia, unos quince o veinte días era lo que yo tardaba en venir, toda vez que esto tenía mucho valor. Porque no hay que mirar las cosas con ilusión. Muchos de aquellos que en aquellos tiempos lloraban de alegría, hoy sin embargo no creen. ¿Por qué?, es lo que me pregunto yo.

I have seen events, and I am not from the village, but I used to come frequently.  I say frequently, about fifteen to twenty days was all that I would delay in coming.  But we should not let illusions blind us.  Many people that in those days used to cry with joy, now they don’t believe.  Why? That is what I ask myself.

¿Por qué?, si entonces se decía que era verdad los hechos de Garabandal, que eran fuera de la tierra o sea que no eran humanos, ¿por qué hoy niegan? Y no me explico, no me explico como estas cosas pueden ocurrir pero por desgracia ocurren.

Why?  If then they claimed that the events of Garabandal were true, that they were not from this earth or not human, why are they negating them now?  I can’t explain how these things happen except to say that they unfortunately happen.

Aquí vamos a empezar con algunas cosas de las niñas, empezando por esto. Estas niñas caen en éxtasis. Pueden ser dos, tres, cuatro a la vez pero digo a la vez que son cuatro personas distintas y en este momento es un solo cuerpo porque aquellas niñas no cae una ahora, luego otra, luego mas tarde otra, sino que habia muchas veces que caían las cuatro en el mismo momento. Otras veces era una, otras veces eran dos, otras veces eran tres, en fin, habia de todo.

We are going to begin with some things about the girls, we’ll begin with this.  These girls fall into ecstasy.  It might be two of them, three, or all four of them at a time, but I say at the same time because they were four distinct persons but in that moment it was only one body because the girls do not fall one then the other, then another, but the four girls would fall at the same moment.  Other times it was one, other times two, other times three, to conclude there was something of everything.

Pero yo pregunto, aquí tenemos la caída de rodillas, ¿por qué cuatro personas distintas caen en un rápido momento que las ve cualquiera de pié y la vista las pierde y cuando las vuelve a ver están de rodillas? ¿Cómo puede ser que cuatro personas distintas caigan en el mismo momento?

But I ask, regarding their fall on their knees, why do four different people fall in one rapid instant, that in one blink of an eye one might see standing, but in the next, you discover them on their knees?  How can four different people fall at the same moment?

Así es como dice Benjamín, en las películas se pueden ver los fotogramas y en uno están de pie y en el siguiente de rodillas. Esto no es posible sino van a mayor velocidad que la película misma. Se trata de un tiempo menor de unas centésimas de segundo, o mejor instantáneo, que no se ve, lo que humanamente es imposible de hacer.

This is what Benjamín says.  In the movies, we can see films where a person is standing, and then in the next one, she’s on her knees.  This isn’t possible unless they are moving at a greater speed that the same film itself. It happens in hundredths of a second, or in an instant, something that is not humanly possible to do.

Para muchos esto no tiene valor, para mi la tiene, ¡mucho! Porque humanamente yo creo que no puede ser el que esto se pueda hacer. Ahora bien, estas niñas no oyen ni ven nada que no sea la Aparición. Eso está bien comprobado por cualquiera que viera los éxtasis. Es una vista fija completamente, mirando hacia arriba. Entre ellas iban de mas a menos porque tenemos a Conchita que esta yo creo que en algunas ocasiones hasta pegaba con la cabeza las espaldas de lo que la tenia para arriba la cabeza, luego la seguía Loli con un poco menos, después Jacinta y después Mari Cruz.

For many people, this might not mean anything of value, but for me it is very important!  I don’t believe this is humanly possible to do.  Now, these girls don’t hear or see anything but the Apparition.  This can be verified by anyone who has seen the ecstasies.  Their eyes are completely fixed, looking up.  This was more obvious in some of them, and in some of them less.  I believe I have seen Conchita with her head so completely backwards that her head would touch her back, but then Loli’s head would be back a little less, then Jacinta, and then Mari Cruz.

Hay otra cosa que no me explico yo cómo puede ser, ya que para los que no creen que dicen que es humano, yo he rogado muchas veces que me explicasen como puede hacerse lo que estas niñas en algunas ocasiones hicieron. ¿Por qué cambian de cara cuando estas niñas están en éxtasis? Estas niñas, ninguna son feas, pero son mucho mas bonitas cuando están en éxtasis que cuando están normales. ¿Por qué cambian de cara? ¿Con qué cosa de este mundo se puede hacer esto? Una cosa de estas no es tan fácil decirla como hacerla. ¿Por qué ese cambio de cara, tan alegre, aquella sonrisa, aquella alegria. Ellas decian que veían a la Virgen y sí que la verían. Aquí se demostró muy claramente de que una persona hacia cosas maravillosas con las niñas. Para mí ese cambio de cara tiene mucho valor.

There is another thing that I can’t explain.  Those who don’t believe say that it is of human doing.  I have asked them many times to explain to me how the girls do some of the things they do.  Why do their faces change when the girls are in ecstasy?  None of these girls are ugly, but they are much more beautiful when they are in ecstasy than when they are in the normal state.  Why do their faces change?  What in this world can do that?  The explanation to this is so easier said than done.  Why do their faces change and become so happy, so smiling, with such joy.  They say that they see the Virgin and they see her.  It is very clearly demonstrated that someone is doing something marvelous with the girls.  For me, the fact that their faces change means a lot.

Conchita dijo en una ocasión que un día, que lo fijó ella por mandato de la Virgen, que fue el 18 de julio de 1962, de que aquel día se vería un Milagro visible mandado del Cielo, que fue el Milagro de la Comunión que llamamos. Ellas dicen que es un “Milagrucu”, como vieron otras cosas de mucho mas valor, para ellas no tendría mayor importancia.

Conchita said on one occasion that day, which she marked by the Virgin’s order, that took place on July 18, 1962, that there would be a visible Miracle sent from Heaven, which was the Miracle of the Communion, as we call it.  The girls said that it was a “little miracle,” since they saw other things that to them had greater value, so for them, it did not have the greatest importance.

Este 18 de julio del año 1962 yo vine al pueblo porque tuve noticias de esto. Y tuve la gran suerte de ponerme completamente al pié de ella cuando esta niña cayó de rodillas en éxtasis. En éxtasis salió de casa y a unos metros, no sé que metros habrá, cuarenta, cincuenta de su casa, cae de rodillas. Esta niña cae con las manos rectas para abajo. Al estar con las manos rectas para abajo tiene la boca cerrada. Así estuvo un poco de tiempo. Abre la boca. Entonces con las linternas, que se veía mejor que de día, se puede decir, porque se veía bien la boca, toda vez que como he dicho y repito la cabeza la tiene muy para atrás, pues se le ve la boca completamente.

On July 18, 1962, I came to the village because I had heard news of this.  I had the good luck to stand next to Conchita when this girl fell on her knees in ecstasy.  She left the house in ecstasy and went a few meters, I don’t know exactly how many, maybe forty or fifty meters away from her house, and then she fell on her knees.  This girl fell with her hands straight down.  When her hands were straight down, her mouth was closed.  She was like this for a while.  She opened her mouth.  With the lanterns, we could see better than if it were daylight, because we saw her mouth well, just as I have said.  I repeat, her head was very far back, so we saw her whole mouth.

Miro la boca con toda sospecha por si tuviera algo en la boca y en aquella boca he dicho y digo y aseguro que no habia nada de nada, era una boca limpia completamente. Así estuvo un buen rato con la boca abierta. Saca la lengua, con la lengua limpia de todo.

I looked at her mouth suspiciously to see if there was something in it.  I am sure and I assure that there was nothing, it was a completely clean mouth.  She stayed there with her mouth open for a while.  She put out her tongue, which was totally clean.

Estando fuera con la lengua, una prima mia me llama y me dice: Benjamín que yo no lo veo. Cambio un rápido momento la vista y cuando vuelvo la vista ya estaba con la Forma en la lengua. Aquí, claro, no puedo saber si se hizo en la lengua, si apareció hecha en la lengua, muchos lo vieron. Esta Forma, aquí vamos a mirar las cosas con seriedad porque me parece que es muy serio esto, tenía un grueso como de dos monedas de cinco duros (entonces las monedas de cinco duros eran de tamaño grande) y me quedo corta. Esta Forma daba un resplandor como todo lo divino, muy agradable, que hubiera estado horas mirando aquel resplandor y no me hubiera cansado de mirarlo en mucho tiempo.

When her tongue was out, my cousin called me and said:  “Benjamín, I can’t see.”  I looked away for a quick moment, and when I turned back, she had the Form on her tongue.  Of course, I can’t know how it made it to her tongue, whether it was formed on her tongue or if it appeared on her tongue, but many people saw it.  This Form, and we are going to look at the things here in all seriousness, because this is very serious to me, it was as thick as two coins (then the coins were large), and here I am a lack for words.  The Form shone like it was divine, very agreeable, so that I could have spent hours looking at that brightness and I would have not grown tired of it.

En varias ocasiones he tenido que hacer declaración de lo que he visto. Yo pregunto ¿por qué daba aquel resplandor? ¿Con qué cosas de este mundo se puede hacer?, porque blanco hay muchas cosas blancas pero que llegue a dar un resplandor como aquel, tan blanco, yo no lo encuentro.

In several occasions I have made a declaration of what I have seen.  I ask, why did it shine?  How could that have been done with things of this world?  There are many things that are white, but to give off a light like that, so white, I have not found anything.

He puesto como ejemplo de esto la nieve. La nieva hiela. Al día siguiente hace sol y este sol dando en la nieve da un brillo que molesta la vista, es todo lo contrario a lo que acabo de decir, pero es lo más parecido que he podido encontrar en este mundo. Y yo digo ¿por qué este resplandor ¡tan agradable!, ¡tan bonito! ¿De donde sale esto? Dicen algunos que lo hizo la niña. ¡De esto nada! El Milagro se cumplió tal como habia dicho Conchita en días anteriores.

The example I have given is the snow.  The snow freezes, and then the next day the sun makes the snow shine, and it hurts the eyes.  This is the opposite of what I want to say, but it is the only similar thing to compare it to in this world.  And I say, why is this light so agreeable? So beautiful!  Where does it come from?  Some people say that the girl did it.  I don’t buy any of this!  The Miracle happened just as Conchita had said it would days before.

Por cierto, dieron las doce de la noche y la gente, como no pasaba nada, decía: ¡esto nada!, ¡esto no tiene ningún valor!, ¡esto es un cuento! Cada uno opinaba como le parecía. Y yo pregunté a algunos: ¿qué hora es? Son las doce y pico. Pero ¿qué hora tenemos por el sol en España? ¡Ah tenemos una hora adelantada! Por consiguiente, antes de las doce de la noche, por la hora solar, pocos minutos antes, la niña salió de casa y a pocos metros recibió la Comunión visible que era la que ella habia anunciado.

Of course, since it was twelve at night and because nothing had happened, the people said, “This is nothing!” -“This does not have any value!” – “It isn’t real!”  Each person gave their opinion as it seemed to them.  I asked some people:  “What time is it?”  It was a little after twelve.  But what time was it according to the sun in Spain?  Oh, it was really an hour earlier!  Of course, it was before twelve at night because of the solar hour.  A few minutes earlier, the girl had left her house and after walking a few meters, she received the Communion which she had announced.

Sufro porque veo el mundo que no respeta estas cosas y cada día estamos peor pero que tiene que llegar todo también es verdad. Las niñas mismas han dicho que llegaría el momento que serian pocos los que llegarían a creer en esto y por desgracia así estamos pasando.

I suffer because I see that the world does not respect these things and each day it is worse and worse; but it is true that all this has to come about.  The girls themselves have said that the moment will arrive when very few would believe and unfortunately this is happening.

Y yo pregunto muchas veces ¿por qué estas dudas? y nadie me puede dar motivos a ello porque hay muchos que dicen que sí, que creen, pero yo veo que no. Y digo que no porque para llevar este mundo como había que llevarle habría que llevar una vida recta y justa.

I have asked many times, why these doubts?  No one can give me a motive for it because there are many people who claim that they do believe, but I see it isn’t true.  I say that they don’t because to lead a life the way one should, we have to lead good and just lives.

En una ocasión, estando en los pinos, subieron dos de las niñas en éxtasis. Estas niñas salen de los pinos en éxtasis de espaldas para atrás. El que conozca el terreno de Garabandal, hay una bajada bastante pendiente. A la entrada de la bajada se paran las dos. Iban agarradas del brazo y de espaldas, mirando para arriba para los pinos. Habia aquel día mucha gente, los habia de todas las edades, los habia mas pequeños que ellas, del tiempo de ellas, mayores que ella, viejos, de todas las edades estábamos allí, y cuando menos lo esperaba nadie de que las niñas estaban allí paradas, estas salen para atrás corriendo a una velocidad que sí, parecía que andaban, pero no podía ser yo creo que anduvieran porque allí nos quedamos todos mirando ya que nadie se atrevió a arrancar a seguirlas porque era imposible seguirlas. He dicho y digo y creo que no me equivoco que no es que andaban, es que volaban y en un rápido momento estaban en la última casa del pueblo.

On one occasion, while at the Pines, two of the girls went up in ecstasy.  These girls left the Pines in ecstasy and walked backwards.  Anyone who knows the terrain in Garabandal knows that there is a difficult descent.  At the entrance of the descent, the two girls stopped.  They were walking backwards and they were looking up toward the Pines.  There were many people there that day, of every age, children younger than the girls, the same age as the girls, older than the girls, old people, all age groups were there. And when everyone least expected it, the girls took off running backwards at great speed, but so gracefully that they seemed to be walking.  We couldn’t believe that they were walking because we all stayed back and looked at them but nobody dared to move to follow them because they were impossible to follow.  I have said and I’ll say again that I believe I am not mistaken, that they didn’t walk, they flew.  In a quick moment, they were at the last house of the village.

¿Qué pasa aquí?, ¿qué es esto?, yo quisiera que se meditaran estas cosas y los que no creen piensen que tenemos que morir y que nos queda otro mundo y que la Virgen si vino aquí es para darnos ejemplo de que tenemos que cambiar de vida, una vida mas justa, la que por desgracia cada día estamos peor y pensemos estas cosas.

What happened here?  What is this?  I wanted to meditate on these things that happened.  Those who do not believe that we are going to die and that exists another world, and if the Virgin came here was to give us an example of how to change our lives and lead a more just life, since we are worse every day.

En otra ocasión, otro de los casos muy serios, Conchita sale de casa en éxtasis, esta va para el portal de la Iglesia. En aquellas circunstancias la Iglesia estaba cerrada, cosa que me parece bien porque si entraban en la Iglesia en éxtasis, la gente no respetaba bancos ni respetaba nada, todo un atropello allí encima de los bancos y entonces cerraron la Iglesia cosa que me pareció bien.

On another occasion, another serious incident, Conchita left the house in ecstasy and went toward the door of the Church.  The Church was closed, which seemed good to me because if they entered the Church in ecstasy, the people would not respect the pews and would run over them or knock them down.  So, then, they decided to lock the Church which seemed like a good idea to me.

Esta niña llega al portal de la Iglesia y en el mismo marco que hay de madera a la entrada de las mujeres, ya que hay dos entradas y por la una entran las mujeres más que por la otra, cae de rodillas, rápidamente como siempre, una rapidez que no hay quien lo haga.

This girl arrived at the door of the Church, at the same place where there is a wooden door frame in the women’s entrance.  There are two entrances and the women enter through one of them more than through the other one.  She fell on her knees, as quickly as always, with a speed impossible for anybody else.

Esta niña, cayendo de rodillas, hace la señal de la Cruz y estuvo allí un poco rezando. Se levanta, se pone de espaldas para la puerta y anda un poco para adelante. Este caso también es muy serio, no es lo mismo decirlo, oírlo que verlo.

This girl, falling on her knees, made the sign of the cross and stayed there praying for a little while.  She got up, turned her back to the door and walked forward a little bit.  This is also very serious.  It is not the same to say it as it is to hear and see it.

Anda un poco para adelante y se para. Con el Crucifijo en la mano derecha, que este no le perdía. Cae recta completamente, como si tirásemos esta botella que tenemos aquí; aquel cuerpo no se dobló nada de nada. La caída que pegó fue grande, muy grande, y las mujeres, unas empezaron a llorar, ¡ay Dios mío que Conchita se mató!, unos gritos, unos lloros. Yo ya tuve que decirles, ¡bueno, si se mató cállense la boca, mañana la enterramos!

She walked forward a little bit and stopped.  She held the crucifix in her right hand, and she would not misplace it.  She fell, completely straight, as though we threw the bottle we have here.  Her body did not bend at all. Her fall was hard. She hit so hard when she fell that some of the women started to cry, “Oh, my God, Conchita is dead!”  Some screamed, some cried.  I said to them, “Well if she died, be quiet, tomorrow we’ll bury her!”

Yo sabia de que nada podía pasar por otras cosas que ya habia visto. Todos estábamos mirando este cuerpo en tierra. Siempre llevaba la ropa muy bien puesta, su ropa no se movía nada, absolutamente nada, sino que estaba como fija al cuerpo.

I knew that nothing could have happened because of so many other things that I had seen before.  All of us were looking at her body on the ground.  Her clothes were always appropriate, and they had not moved at all, it was as though they were glued to the body.

Un señor que estaba a la otra parte pudo pasar la mano por debajo del cuerpo porque el cuerpo iba en el aire completamente. Entonces se levanta; ¿Cómo se levanta un cuerpo sin poder doblarse nada, ni rodillas, ni cintura, ni nada absolutamente? Pues según cayó recta completamente, después de un rato, así se levantó. Pensemos que si las niñas decían que veían a la Virgen, para la Virgen no hay nada imposible.

A man who was in another part could pass his hand under the body because it was completely in the air.  Then she got up.  How does a person get up without bending a thing, not the knees, the waist, absolutely nothing?  Well, in the same manner that she fell completely straight, after a while, in the same way she arose.  Let’s reflect that if the girls said they saw the Virgin, nothing was impossible for the Virgin.

Esto que voy a decir no fui yo solo sino que éramos tres personas las que tuvimos la ocasión de escuchar a la Virgen. Por eso digo y repito que hay una Mujer en lo alto y en lo bajo cuando Ella quiere que puede hacer muchas cosas en este mundo porque tiene poder para ello.

What I am about to say did not happen to me alone, but there were three of us who had the opportunity to hear the Virgin.  This is the reason that I say and repeat, that there is a Woman on high who comes down and when She desires it, She can do many things in this world because She has the power to do it.

Esto que voy a decir lo he dicho personalmente, pero es la primera vez que en magnetofón lo pongo. A base de estas cosas tuve que ir en una ocasión a Burgos a hacer una declaración sobre esto. Cuando terminé de hacer la declaración, o sea, en mi interior pensé y dije: “ya no digo mas,” en este momento una voz de una mujer, piénsese bien esto, una voz de una Mujer que lo divino no tiene nada que ver con la tierra, con una dulzura, rezando el Padre Nuestro. Entonces reza el Padre Nuestro de esta manera:

What I am going to say I have said personally, but it is the first time I do it on a tape recorder.  Because of all these happenings, I had to go to Burgos to make a declaration about this.  When I finished making the declaration, I thought to myself and I said:  “I will not say anything more.” In that moment the voice of a woman, I thought this, a voice of a Woman, which the divine has nothing to do with the earth, with sweetness, praying the Our Father like this:

“Padre nuestro que estás en los Cielos, santificado sea tu nombre.”

“Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Entonces un señor que estaba sentado, que le tengo de testigo si hace falta, se levanta con una ilusión, hecha manos a la cabeza y dice, ¡Dios mío pero qué es esto! ¿Qué es esto Dios mío? La Virgen siguió hablando, yo creo que no rezando pero yo me quedé mirando la actitud del Padre y hablo las cosas claras que era un Sacerdote y Ella siguió hablando cuatro o seis palabras más. Lo que dijo no lo pude saber. Siempre deja algo para sufrir que es más bonito que hubiera callado él hasta que hubiera terminado la Virgen de hablar, pero no pudo evitarlo. Sufrió tal clase de emoción que no pudo evitarlo y yo me quedé mirando la actitud de él ya que yo estaba muy sereno en aquel momento. Por eso digo que hay una Mujer en lo alto que estuvo en Garabandal y estaba allí mismo en ese momento.

Then a man who was sitting, who is a witness, stood up, put his hands on his head, and said: “My God, what is this!  My God, what is this?”  The Virgin continued talking, and I believe she wasn’t praying but I stayed looking at the Priest and he said things clearly while She spoke four or six more words.  I do not know what she said.  She always leaves something to suffer that is more beautiful than if she had been quiet.  Until the Virgin stopped speaking, he said nothing, but he could not avoid it.  He suffered such emotion that he could not avoid it and I looked at him and I was very serene in that moment.  Because of this, I say that there is a Mother on high who was in Garabandal and She was there in that moment.

Las niñas de Garabandal decian que tenía una voz que no se parecía a ninguna mujer de la tierra, porque todo era dulzura, y por esto yo les dije a las niñas en mas de una ocasión: “vosotras habéis visto a la Virgen, os lo digo yo que la habéis visto,” porque su voz era como la niñas decian. En esto tienen toda la razón porque es una voz divina que no tiene comparación humana. Lo humano con lo divino no tiene absolutamente nada que ver lo uno con lo otro.

The girls of Garabandal say that She has a voice that is not like the voice of any woman on earth because of the sweetness.  Because of this, I told the girls on more than one occasion:  “you have seen the Virgin, I say that you have seen the Virgin,” because her voice is as the girls say.  This makes sense because it is a divine voice that has no human point of comparison.  The human and the divine are completely unrelated.

Vamos a otra cosa que también tiene su valor. En una ocasión estando Conchita en la Calleja, en el cuadro que se llama, yendo para los pinos, sale de espaldas para atrás. Y un hermano de ella que ya murió, un tal Aniceto, me dice: “cójala usted por un brazo a ver que le parece.” Entonces, según ella iba con los brazos en Cruz, la cojo por un brazo y no pude moverle de ningún modo. Entonces yo tenía mucha fuerza, sé que cien kilos los levantaba fácilmente del suelo. Y yo me decía: “pero qué tiene este brazo que yo no le puedo mover.” Pues me quedé con las ganas porque no pude ni doblarle ni moverle nada absolutamente.

We are going to talk about something else that also has value.  On one occasion, Conchita was in the Calleja, in what they call “the cuadro,” walking toward the Pines and then she went backwards.  One of her brothers who have since died, Aniceto, told me:  “take her by the arm to see how she is.”  Then, since she was walking with her hands in a cross, I took her by the arm, but I couldn’t move her at all.  I was very strong then; I could lift one hundred kilos from the floor easily.  And I said:  “What is wrong with this arm that I can’t move it.”  I had to content myself with my failed attempts because I could not bend it or move it at all.

En otra ocasión vine al pueblo y había oído decir de que las niñas tenían un peso exagerado, que no había quien las mover. Entonces lo cuento en Torrelavega. Unos se reían y otros pensaban lo que yo decía. Les digo yo, mañana mismo arranco yo para Garabandal a ver si puedo levantar alguna de las niñas y salir de la duda exacta.

On another occasion, I came to the village and I had heard talk about the girls weighing excessively more than usual; no one could lift them.  I told this story in Torrelavega.  Some people laughed and others thought about what I said.  I told them, tomorrow I’m going to Garabandal to see if I can lift one of the girls; and overcome any doubts.

En efecto, vengo al pueblo. Estoy aquí con alguna persona que yo conocía para que estuvieran con los familiares de las niñas para cuando alguna cayese en éxtasis. Cae Loli. Entonces me dice el padre, que ya le conocía yo de años anteriores: tú creo que vienes a esto, a ver lo que pesan las niñas. Esa es hija mía. Levántala a ver que te parece. Me pongo a levantarla, un criatura de doce años a trece que cualquiera puede pensar lo que puede pesar. Por más esfuerzos que hice no pudo ser el moverla del suelo. Entonces yo pensaba y decía, pero bueno, ¿qué tiene este cuerpo? O esta niña pesa mucho mas de cien kilos o a mi me quitan las fuerzas, porque yo cien kilos sé que los levantaba fácilmente. La ropa de la niña, al intentar moverla no quedó bien puesta pero una de las videntes no hizo mas que tocarla con los dedos de la mano y quedó la ropa completamente normal.

I arrived in the village I am here with a person I know so they are with the girls’ relatives in case one falls into ecstasy.  Loli falls.  Then, her father, whom I had met years before, says to me:  “I believe this is what you came for, to see what the girls weigh.  This is my daughter.  Lift her and see how it seems to you.”  I went to lift her, a girl twelve to thirteen years of age, whose weight anyone could estimate.  As much as I tried, I couldn’t move her from the floor.  Then I thought and said:  “What does this body have?  Either this child weighs much more than one hundred kilos, or I am being robbed of strength, for I know that I could lift one hundred kilos easily.  When I tried to move the girl, her clothes were left untidy.  One of the other seers had only to touch her with her fingers and her clothes returned to normal.

Esto hacían las niñas, ellas se movían, hacían lo que querían unas con otras y nosotros no podíamos hacerlo. Yo creo que tiene todo mucho que pensar.

The girls did this, they moved, they did what they wanted to each other, but no one else could do it.  I believe that all of this gives you much to think about.

Por otra parte voy a hablar de otra cosa que a mi personalmente me ha pasado. En el año 1970, el 17 de Abril me parece que fue, vine yo a Garabandal y entonces no habia carretera todavía y subí andando. Yo andaba bastante regular ya, ya que llevo años padeciendo muchos padecimientos, Dios y la Virgen sabrán lo que hacen conmigo. Llego a Garabandal y mandé ir a la fuente de Conchita que llama el pueblo a buscar agua. Bebo un poco de agua, con mucho cuidado porque venía cansado, y no sé lo que aquella agua pudo hacer en mi cuerpo. Lo cierto es que me puse muy mal, muy mal. Al día siguiente me bajan en coche otra vez para mi pueblo.

I am going to talk about another thing that happened to me.  In 1970, on April 17, I came to Garabandal.  At that time, there was still no paved road, and I walked up.  I walked quite normally, even though I have been suffering of many ailments for many years, God and the Virgin must know what they are doing with me.  I arrived in Garabandal, and I sent for some water from Conchita’s fountain, which is what the people in the village call it.  I drank a little water, very carefully because I was tired, and I don’t know what that water could have done to my body.  What is certain is that it made me very, very sick.  The next day I was taken by car back to my village.

Llaman al médico, me pone el termómetro y el hombre se asustó. Puso interés, nos conocemos hace muchos años, y yo mal, mal, estuve dieciocho días sin comer ni beber nada porque sed tenía mucha pero si bebía dos gotas de líquido, de lo que fuera, era tal la friera que cogía que no habia forma de quitármelo, ni con cosas calientes ni con nada. Comer nada, de eso nada, no podía ser, prefería morir antes. A los dieciocho días empecé por tomar un poco de caldo de gallina. Así tiré hasta treinta y ocho días se puede decir casi sin comer ni beber, a base de un poco de caldo de gallina. Los últimos días perdí el sentido completamente, ya no sabía si era de día o de noche y la gente ya estaba esperando a oír las campanas de la Iglesia avisando de que se murió Benjamín. Habían venido varios amigos de Torrelavega, Santander y hasta de Asturias y todos los días esperaban oír que me había muerto.

They called the doctor and he took my temperature and was frightened.  We had known each other for many years and I was very, very sick.  For eighteen days, I didn’t eat or drink.  I was very thirsty but if I drank even a couple drops of any liquid I would become so shivering cold, that there was no way to make me warm again, not with heaters or anything.  I ate nothing, I couldn’t, and I would have preferred to die.  After eighteen days I began to eat a little chicken broth.  I barely ate or drank anything for thirty-eight days, only chicken broth.  The last days, I lost my senses.  I didn’t know if it was day or night and the people were waiting to hear the church bells that would chime to announce my death.  Various friends from Torrelavega, Santander, and Asturias had come, and they waited to hear that I had died.

A los treinta y ocho días despierto, un despertar como si hubiera estado sano completamente, como si hubiera dormido y me hubiera despertado. Yo decía pero ¿qué es esto?, yo no tengo nada. Ni sentía sed ni sentía hambre ni sentía nada, completamente sano. Digo, bueno, eso será unas horas antes de morir ya que tengo oído que algunos enfermos, horas antes de morir, se les quita la enfermedad y se ponen mejor. Lo llevaba todo con buena paciencia. Al día siguiente, viendo que no tenia dolor ninguno ni nada, aquel día ya empecé por comer pero un comer que fue que me entró un hambre terrible. Así estuve unos días comiendo mucho y engordé todo lo que había perdido y aun decían que estaba más gordo que antes de caer enfermo. Yo me encontraba fuerte, pero muy bien. Y aquí pregunto yo, ¿qué pasó aquí para despertar y encontrarme sano?

After thirty-eight days I awoke, and I awoke completely healed, as though I had been sleeping normally and I woke up.  I said, what is this?  I don’t have anything.  I wasn’t thirsty or hungry or anything, I was completely cured.  I wondered, because I have heard that in the hours before death, some sick people become better.  I took it all in with patience.  The next day, I didn’t have any pain at all, but I began to eat.  When I ate, a terrible hunger set in.  For several days, I ate a lot, and I gained back all of the weight I had lost, some even said that I was fatter than before I got sick.  I was strong, and well.  I ask, what happened to me that I would wake up and be cured?

Dice la gente y yo también lo digo que fue un Milagro de la Virgen. Yo digo la Virgen porque esta pobre Madre ha hecho conmigo cosas que no puedo menos de llorar… de que no puedo menos de ponerla en primer puesto y Ella hará conmigo lo que le parezca.

The people said that it was a Miracle from the Virgin, and I think so too.  I say the Virgin because this poor Mother has done things for me that I can only cry about… I can only put her in the first place, and She will do with me what She sees fit.

Las niñas en éxtasis a veces iban para atrás tan veloces que los que íbamos con ellas, de la edad que fueran, no las podía alcanzar nadie. ¿Por qué no se mataron contra las paredes del pueblo, ya que no ven ni oyen nada? ¿Quién las guiaba? Era la Virgen quien las guiaba.

Sometimes when the girls are in ecstasy they went backwards so quickly that those who were with them could not keep up with them, regardless of their age.  How come that they did not get killed crashing against the walls of the village, since they could not see nor hear anything?  Who guided them?  It was the Virgin who guided them.

Estas niñas cuando caían de redilas que caerían cientos de veces, jamás se hicieron ningún daño en las rodillas con la rapidez que caían que las estabas viendo de pié y la vista las perdía y cuando las volvías a ver ya estaban de rodillas. ¿Por qué no se mancaron alguna vez las rodillas, con las piedras que entonces había? Para mí hay pruebas suficientes de lo que ellas decían que era la Virgen que las llevaba.

When these girls fell to their knees, and they must have fallen hundreds of times, they never did any damage to their knees, even with the rapidity of the fall.  We might be looking at them, and look away quickly, and then they are on their knees.  How could it be that they never marked their knees against the sharp stones that there were then?  For me, this is sufficient proof of what they claimed, that it was the Virgin who carried them.

Pensemos que tenemos que morir y que nos queda otro mundo y dejemos de este mundo muchas cosas ya que tampoco creo que la Virgen nos obligue a hacer un sacrificio terrible diario, pero sí un sacrificio de Oración, Penitencia como dicen los Mensajes, que son cortos pero muy grandes en el contenido de ellos.

Let’s meditate on the fact that that we have to die and that there will be the other world, and let’s abandon many things of this world.  I don’t think that the Virgin is going to force us to make a terrible daily sacrifice, only a sacrifice of Prayer and Penance, as taught by the Messages which are short, but are very valuable in their content.

No me explico yo, cuatro niñas rezando a la vez un Rosario que por mucho que queramos hacer nosotros tampoco sale como rezaban las niñas. ¿Quién las enseñó a rezar así? Ellas decían que la Virgen y la Virgen serían. Rosario para llevar las cuentas no llevaban, y pensemos en esto otro: ellas siempre esperaban a que terminase de rezar el último que iba, aun cuando sabemos que ellas en éxtasis no oían ni veían nada de fuera y sin embargo alguien las guiaba para saber cuando terminaba de rezar el ultimo y seguir ellas.

I can’t explain four girls praying the Rosary at the same time; as much as we want to do it like that, it never sounds like the girls.  Who taught them this?  They say the Virgin, and it was the Virgin.  They never carried a rosary to count the beads and they always waited for the last person praying to finish before continuing.  When we know that when they are in ecstasy, they don’t hear us or see anyone outside of the ecstasy but someone still guided them to know when the last person was finished for them to continue.

En una ocasión iban las cuatro rezando el Rosario por los caminos del Pueblo y me ponía a una parte y parecía que era aquella la que rezaba. Me ponía al otro lado y era la otra y resulta que las cuatro pronunciaban las mismas palabras y no se oye más que una voz.  ¿Por qué no se oyen todas y se equivoca alguna en algo? Pues todas ellas rezaban, pero la voz es solamente una.

On one occasion the four girls were praying the Rosary through the streets of the village.  I placed myself next to one of them and it seemed to me that it was her who was praying.  I went on the other side and then it was the other girl because all of the four girls pronounced the same words so you could only heard one voice.  Why could you not hear all of their voices?  Why didn’t one of them make a mistake?  They all prayed, but there was only one voice.

Cosas que hay que pensarlas, meditarlas un poco, porque en este mundo, como dice algún refrán, nada es verdad ni mentira, todo según el color del cristal con que se mira. Y hache hay que mirar con qué poder rezaban de esta manera. Como me decía una vez un Cura aquí mismo: el que oiga rezar el Rosario de las niñas y no crea, ese no cree en Dios ni cree en la Virgen ni cree en nada.

These are things to think about, to meditate on, because in this world, as one refrain says, nothing is either true or a lie, rather, everything takes on the color of the crystal we are looking through.  Here we have to look at how they could pray like this.  A priest here once said to me:  if a person hears the children praying the Rosary and still doesn’t believe, that person doesn’t believe in God, in the Virgin, or in anything.

The Apparitions of the Virgin Mary in San Sebastián de Garabandal

081 Benjamín saw the Virgin as the girls did, and he also heard her voice.

1. Benjamín Gómez, delante del huerto de la casa de Conchita.

Mr. Benjamín Gómez, in front of the orchard near Conchita’s house.

Don Benjamín Gómez, vecino de Pesués, Cantabria, pueblo cercano a Garabandal, fue testigo de numerosos éxtasis de las niñas.

Mr. Benjamín Gómez, a neighbor from Pesués, Cantabria, a village near Garabandal, witnessed many of the girls’ ecstasies.

Durante las Apariciones de la Santísima Virgen María dió un cambio muy grande a su vida, ya que había vivido apartado de la Iglesia durante muchos años.

During the Apparitions of the Most Holy Virgin Mary, there was a great change in his life, since he had been living away from the Church for many years.

Durante las Apariciones se convirtió y recuperó la paz y la felicidad de vivir en Gracia de Dios.

During the Apparitions he converted and regained the peace and happiness of living in the Grace of God.

De entre los sucesos que vivió personalmente hay algunos que solía contar con frecuencia a los forasteros:

Among the events he personally witnessed, there are some that he used to frequently tell to outsiders:

Siendo un hombre muy fuerte en su juventud, con una fuerza que, según decía, de joven, levantaba con facilidad, con ambas manos, un par de pesos que sumasen más de cien kilos, sin embargo fue incapaz de mover a las niñas en éxtasis lo que le llamó la atención sobremanera.

He was a very strong man in his youth, with such strength that according to him, he could easily lift more than one hundred kilos with both hands.  Nevertheless, he was incapable of moving the girls in ecstasy, something that impressed him greatly.

En una ocasión tuvo una prueba de la existencia del Purgatorio:

On one occasion he had a proof of the existence of Purgatory:

Caminaba con su borrico por el campo cuando de pronto vió a un conocido suyo que había muerto hace años. Estaba sufriendo, envuelto en una luz cálida como de fuego. El borrico se asustó y salió corriendo. Benjamín siguió mirando y se dijo, “¿cómo es posible que este hombre esté sufriendo allá en la otra vida sin que nadie le ayude?”

He was walking with his donkey through the field when suddenly he saw someone he knew who had died several years before.  He was suffering, covered in a warm light like fire.  The donkey became frightened and ran away.  Benjamín continued looking and said to himself, “how is it possible that this man is suffering there in the other life and no one helps him?

El sabía que, en aquel lugar, ese hombre había tomado parte en un crimen durante la guerra civil y en aquel mismo lugar estaba padeciendo la culpa. Lo comentó con un viejo amigo suyo del pueblo de Pesués que le dijo:

He knew that, in that particular location, this man had taken part in a crime during the Civil War and it was in that same place where he was suffering from the guilt.  He commented on this to an old friend in the village of Pesués and his friend said:

─ “yo también lo vi, pero no te lo quería decir porque no quería que te rieses de mí.”

─ “I saw him also, but I didn’t want to tell you because I didn’t want you to laugh at me.”

Desde entonces no cesó de pedir por él, en especial a partir de su conversión definitiva.

From that time on, he didn’t stop praying for him, especially after his conversion.

Un suceso muy importante para su vida fue cuando, por una grave enfermedad, entró en coma, ya sin poder comer ni beber. Todos en el pueblo esperaban la hora de su muerte.

An event that was very important for his life was when, as a result of a serious illness, he entered into a coma and could not eat or drink.  Everyone in the village awaited the hour of his death.

Benjamín lo relata así:

En el año 1970, el 17 de Abril me parece que fué, vine yo a Garabandal y entonces no había carretera todavía y subí andando. Yo andaba bastante regular ya, ya que llevo años padeciendo muchos padecimientos, Dios y la Virgen sabrán lo que hacen conmigo. Llegue a Garabandal y mandé ir a la fuente de Conchita que llama el pueblo a buscar agua.

Benjamín relates it like this:

In the year 1970, on April 17, I came to Garabandal, and I walked up because in those days there was no paved highway.  I used to walk fairly regularly, since I have been suffering many ailments for years, but God and the Virgin knew what to do with me.  I arrived in Garabandal and I went to Conchita’s fountain, as the villagers call it, to find water.

Bebo un poco de agua, con mucho cuidado porque venía cansado, y no sé lo que aquel agua pudo hacer en mi cuerpo. Lo cierto es que me puse muy mal, muy mal. Al día siguiente me bajan en coche otra vez para mi pueblo.

I drank a little water very carefully because I was tired, and I do not know what that water did do to my body. What is certain is that I became very, very, sick.  The next day I was taken by car back down to my village.

Llaman al médico, me pone el termómetro y el hombre se asustó. Puso interés, nos conocemos hace muchos años, y yo mal, mal, estuve dieciocho dias sin comer ni beber nada porque sed tenía mucha pero si bebía dos gotas de líquido, de lo que fuera, era tal la friura que cogía que no había forma de quitármelo, ni con cosas calientes ni con nada. Comer nada, de eso nada, no podía ser, prefería morir antes.

They called the doctor, and when he took my temperature it scared him.  We had known each other for a long time and he took a special interest, and I was very sick.  I went eighteen days without eating or drinking anything.  I was very thirsty, but If I drank as little as two drops of any liquid it would trigger such chills that nothing could take them away from me, not even with hot drinks or anything.  I couldn’t eat anything, I would have preferred to die before eating anything.

A los dieciocho días empecé por tomar un poco de caldo de gallina. Así tiré hasta treinta y ocho dias se puede decir casi sin comer ni beber, a base de un poco de caldo de gallina.

After eighteen days I began to drink a little chicken broth.  So you could say that I spent thirty-eight days this without eating or drinking anything except little bits of chicken broth.

Los últimos días perdí el sentido completamente, ya no sabía si era de día o de noche y la gente ya estaba esperando a oír las campanas de la Iglesia avisando de que se murió Benjamín. Habían venido varios amigos de Torrelavega, Santander y hasta de Asturias y todos los días esperaban oir que me había muerto.

The last days I lost my senses completely; I didn’t know if it was day or night and the people were waiting to hear the Church bells ring, announcing that Benjamín had died.  Several of my friends had come from Torrelavega, Santander, and Asturias, and everyone expected to hear that I had died.

En este punto, a muchos ha dicho que, de repente, despertó y se sintió sano, pero la verdadera historia la dijo años después, en privado, a un amigo suyo muy querido de él:

At that point, many have said that suddenly, he woke up and felt healed, but he told the true story later, privately, to a friend:

La Virgen del Carmen de Garabandal se le apareció a cierta altura sobre los piés de su cama, tal como la veían las niñas, y con amor de Madre le curó al instante y pudo ya levantarse, comer y hacer vida normal.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel of Garabandal appeared at a certain height above the foot of his bed, looking just as the children described her, and with a Mother’s love she cured him in an instant and he was able to get up, eat, and live a normal life.

Dice Benjamín:

“Aunque es un Milagro de Dios, yo digo que de la Virgen porque:

Benjamín said:

“Although it is a Miracle from God, I say it is from the Virgin because:

─ Esta pobre Madre ha hecho conmigo cosas que no puedo menos de llorar … de que no puedo menos de ponerla en primer puesto y Ella hará conmigo lo que le parezca.”

─ This poor Mother has done such things for me that I can only cry… I can only put her in the first place and She will do with me what she sees fit.”

En este momento Benjamín llora … de verdadera contrición, por amor a Dios y a la Virgen Madre.

At this moment Benjamín begins to cry… from true contrition, for love of God and the Virgin Mother.

Cuenta sobre esta Visión que:

He tells about this Vision:

─ “Con ninguna cosa humana o imaginable podría explicar lo que sentí, lo divino y lo humano nada, nada, tienen que ver lo uno con lo otro.”

─ “There is nothing human or imaginable that could explain what I felt; the divine and the human have nothing to do with one another.”

Refiriéndose a que no sabía explicar con nada de acá, de este mundo, las cosas sobrenaturales que sintió viendo a la Virgen.

He was referring to the fact that he didn’t know how to explain with anything in this world, the supernatural things that he felt when he saw the Virgin.

Posteriormente, desde su casa en Pesués, y en Garabandal, en su casita al lado de la de Conchita, dió a conocer a muchos las Apariciones y con su magnetófono solía poner a los forasteros fragmentos del Rosario que rezaban las niñas en éxtasis, con un rezo pausado y meditado de cada frase, y un énfasis en la voz. Después solía relatar el Milagro de la Comunión visible de Conchita que el mismo vivió personalmente.

Later, from his home in Pesués, and in Garabandal, in his little house next to Conchita’s, he informed many about the apparitions and with a recorder he used to play fragments of the Rosary prayed by the girls while in ecstasy so that strangers could hear.  It was a slow prayer pausing and meditating on each phrase.  Afterwards, he would tell about the Miracle of the Conchita’s visible Communion that he witnessed personally.

Es muy conocido su testimonio de la Comunión visible de Conchita que el vió y le impresionó profundamente. Estando en Burgos, haciendo una declaración sobre esto, oyó la Voz de la Virgen.

His testimony about Conchita’s visible Communion is very well known; he saw it and it impressed him greatly.  When he was in Burgos, making a declaration about this, he heard the Voice of the Virgin.

Dice Benjamín:

“Esto que voy a decir lo he dicho personalmente, pero es la primera vez que en magnetofón lo pongo.”

Benjamín says:

“What I am going to say I have said it personally, but it is the first time I have recorded it.”

A base de estas cosas tuve que ir en una ocasión a Burgos a hacer una declaración sobre esto. Cuando terminé de hacer la declaración, o sea, en mi interior pensé y dije:

I had to go to Burgos on one occasion to make a declaration about this.  When I had finished making the declaration I thought and said to myself:

─ “Ya no digo mas.”

─ “I will not say any more.”

En este momento una voz, de una mujer, piénsese bien esto, una voz de una Mujer que lo divino no tiene nada que ver con la tierra, con una dulzura, rezando el Padre Nuestro.

In that moment, a woman’s voice, think about this, the voice of a Woman, since the divine has nothing to do with the earth, with sweetness, praying the “Our Father.”

Entonces reza el Padre Nuestro de esta manera:

She prayed the Our Father like this:

─ “Padre nuestro que estás en los Cielos, santificado sea tu Nombre.”

─ “Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy Name.”

Entonces un señor que estaba sentado, que le tengo de testigo si hace falta, se levanta con una ilusión, hecha manos a la cabeza y dice:

Then a man who was sitting down, he can be my witness if necessary, stood up with excitement, put his hands on his head and said:

─ “¡Dios mío!, pero ¿qué es esto?, ¿qué es esto Dios mío?”

─ “Oh my God!  What is this?  What is this, my God?”

La Virgen siguió hablando, yo creo que no rezando pero yo me quedé mirando la actitud del Padre y hablo las cosas claras que era un Sacerdote y Ella siguió hablando cuatro o seis palabras más. Lo que dijo no lo pude saber.

The Virgin continued talking, I don’t think she was praying, but I continued looking at the priest’s attitude and he spoke clearly and said that he was a priest.  She continued saying four or six more words.  I do not know what She said.

Siempre deja algo para sufrir que es más bonito que hubiera callado él hasta que hubiera terminado la Virgen de hablar, pero no pudo evitarlo. Sufrió tal clase de emoción que no pudo evitarlo y yo me quedé mirando la actitud de él ya que yo estaba muy sereno en aquel momento. Por eso digo que hay una Mujer en lo alto que estuvo en Garabandal y estaba allí mismo en ese momento.

There is always something to suffer that it would have been more beautiful if he had been quiet until the Virgin had stopped talking, but he could not help it.  He underwent such emotion that he could not avoid it and I continued observing his attitude since I was very serene in that moment.  This is why I say that there is a Woman from on high who was in Garabandal and who was also there in that moment.

Las niñas de Garabandal decían que tenía una voz que no se parecía a ninguna mujer de la tierra, porque todo era dulzura, y por esto yo les dije a las niñas en más de una ocasión, cuando tuvieron las dudas:

The girls of Garabandal used to say that She had a voice that is unlike the voice of any woman on earth because it is so sweet.  For this reason, on more than one occasion when the girls were having doubts, I told them:

─ “Vosotras habéis visto a la Virgen, os lo digo yo que la habéis visto.”

─ “You have seen the Virgin; I tell you that you have seen her.”

Porque su voz era como las niñas decían. En esto tienen toda la razón porque es una voz divina que no tiene comparación humana. Lo humano con lo divino no tiene absolutamente nada que ver lo uno con lo otro.

This was because Her voice was just as the girls said.  They are exactly right because it is a divine voice that cannot compared to anything human.  The human and the divine have absolutely nothing to do with one another.

La muerte de Benjamín y su subida al Cielo coincidió con la Visita de la Virgen a su pueblo.

Benjamín’s death and arrival in Heaven coincided with the Virgin’s visit to his village.

Estaba la Virgen peregrina de Fátima en su pueblo, en Pesués.

The Pilgrim Virgin of Fátima was in his village, Pesués.

Como es sabido, en sus viajes por todo el mundo, la Virgen peregrina de Fátima puede llegar a un pueblo o parroquia pequeña en muy pocas ocasiones cada muchos años. Ese día estaba allí y a su pies estuvo Benjamín Gómez, en su entierro, en su caminar hacia el Cielo.

As it is known, in her journeys throughout the entire world, the Pilgrim Virgin of Fátima only arrives to a small village or parish in very few occasions in several years.  That day she was there, and Benjamín Gómez was at her feet during his burial; in his journey towards Heaven.

Este amor de la Virgen Madre para todos nosotros sus hijos es muy evidente en las Apariciones de Garabandal; decía la Virgen a Conchita durante la Aparición del 13 de Noviembre de 1965:

This love of the Virgin Mother for all of her children is very evident in the Apparitions of Garabandal.  The Virgin told Conchita during the Apparition on November 13, 1965:

─ “Dime Conchita, dime cosas de mis hijos, a todos los llevo bajo mi manto.”

─ “Tell me, Conchita, tell me things about my children; I carry all of them under my mantle.

Y después de besar todo dijo:

After kissing everything she said:

─ “Mi Hijo, por medio de este beso que he dado aquí, hará prodigios, repártelos a los demás.”

─ “My Son will perform wonders through the kisses I have given here.  Give the objects to everyone.”

Bendita la hora en que Dios envió a nuestra Bendita Madre a Garabandal. Con Ella nos vienen, de su Hijo, todas las gracias, en el presente y en el futuro.

Blessed was the hour in which God sent our Blessed Mother to Garabandal.  With her all graces from Her Son come to us, in the present and in the future.
